I saw an episode of Leave It To Beaver once when he receives an invitation to go to a little girl’s birthday party. He will be the only boy and he shouts, “I won’t do it and you can’t make me.” In Beaver’s case, he was forced by his parents to attend and while trying to escape a spin the bottle game, enters another room and is not only saved from embarrassment but meets the little girl’s father and has a good time.
In my book, The Invitation, Laci Abbott aka Laci Lantana, a famous concert pianist, also receives an invitation to play piano in a concert with her former partner. She’s just as adamant about not attending…and shouts to her agent, “I won’t do it and you can’t make me. or words to that effect. But, as a result of that invitation, she discovers her own self-worth and will also find the true meaning of love.
Not all invitations will promise true love or happy endings and some invitations promise nothing but trouble.
As a young adult, I was invited to a party hosted by a lot of influential people. Doctors, attorneys and judges would be in attendance. At the party there were a lot of drugs being passed around. I didn’t need to be in that environment even if it was popular and no big deal at the time. And I left. I never regretted my decision…but some of my friends did.
The Invitations we accept and the choices we make in life can alter the course of our lives. Consider the consequences before you do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. It’s okay to say, ” I won’t do it and you can’t make me.”
